Albert McAfee first appears in the deed records of Prairie County in Vol. KK, Page 330, when he receives 40 acres of land in a “Donation Deed” from the State of Arkansas. The land in question had been forfeited to the State for non-payment of taxes in the years 1865 and 1866. In return for the property, Albert was required to improve and cultivate at least five acres and to reside on the property, or if not residing on the property, to improve and place in readiness for cultivation at least ten acres. The deed was signed on August 1, 1878. On August 12, 1878, a certification is placed on file that the proof of improvements had been made. Twenty of these acres are transferred from Albert McAfee and wife Johney Elizabeth McAfee to E. M. Apperson & Co. on December 17, 1878. This is the only documentary evidence found thus far to confirm the name of Albert’s wife, as told to me by my grandmother Lucy Mason Hodge. All other records refer to either “Jane” or “Elizabeth” . “Johney Elizabeth” may have been a nickname, but it is the name passed down in the family by oral tradition.
