To the Honorable County Judge of Bastrop County, Texas,

            Your petitioner, Gabriel M. Lentz respectfully represents that he is a resident citizen of Bastrop County, in the State of Texas, and that he makes this application for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the act passed by the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved May 12, A.D. 1899, the same being an act entitled “An act to carry into effect the amendment to the Constitution of the State of Texas, providing that aid may be granted to disabled and dependent Confederate soldiers, sailors, and their widows under certain conditions, and to make an appropriation therefor,” and I do solemnly swear that the answers I have given to the following questions are true.

            Note—Applicant must make answer to all of the following questions, and such answers must be written out plainly in ink.

Q. What is your name?  Answer:  Gabriel M. Lentz

Q. What is your age?  Answer:  My age is 71 years.

Q. In what County do you reside? Answer:  Bastrop County.

Q. How long have you resided in said County and what is your post office address?  Answer: have resided in Bastrop County 50 years.  Red Rock, Texas.

Q. Have you applied for a pention under the Confederate Pension Law heretofore, and been rejected?  If so, state when and where.  Answer:  Yes, in year 1903.

Q. What is your occupation if able to engage in one?  Answer:  Farmer.

Q. What is your physical condition?  Answer:  Broken constitution.  Kidney disease.

Q. If your physical condition is such that you are unable by your own labor to earn a support, state what caused such disability.  Answer:  by a broken constitution and kidney disease.

Q. In what State was your command originally organized?  Answer:  State of Texas.

Q. How long did you serve?  Give date of enlistment and discharge.  Answer:  Served four years.  Year 1861 inlisted (sic).  discharged in year 1865.

Q. What was the name or letter of your company and name or number of your regiment?  Answer:  Company D 12th Texas Cavalry.

Q. State whether you swerved in the infantry, artillery, cavalry, or the navy.  Answer.  Cavalry.

Q. State whether or not you have received any pension or veteran donation land certificate under any previous law, and if you answer in the affirmative state what pension or veteran donation land certificate you have received.  Answer:  none.

Q. What real and personal property do you now own, and what is the present value of such property?  Give list of such property and value.  Answer:  I do not own any property of any kind.

Q. What property, and what was the value thereof, have you sold or conveyed within two years prior to the date of this application?  Answer:  none.

Q. What estate has your wife in her own right, real and personal, and what is its value?  Answer:  I have no wife.

Q. What income, if any, do you receive?  Answer:  none.

Q. Are you in indigent circumstances; that is, are you in actual want, and destitute of property and means of subsistence?  Answer:  yes.

Q. Are you unable by your labor to earn a support?  Answer:  yes.

Q. Have you transferred to others any property of value of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law?  Answer:  I have not.

Q. Did you ever desert the Confederacy?  Answer:  no.

Q. Have you been continuously since the first day of January, 1880, a bona fide resident of this State?  Answer:  yes.

Q. If you originally enlisted in the Confederate service from the State of Texas, were you at the date of the passage of this act, a bona fide resident citizen of the State of Texas?  Answer:  yes.

            Wherefore your petitioner prays that his application for pension be approved and that such other proceedings be had in the premises as are required by law.

Anderson and Guy Wolfenberger who are personally known to me to be credible citizens, who being by me duly sworn on oath, state that they personally know Gabriel M. Lentz the above named applicant for a pension, and that they personally know that the said Gabriel M. Lentz is unable to support himself by labor of any sort.

Anderson and Guy Wofenbarger(sic) credible persons and residents of Bastrop County Tex as who after being by me duly sworn upon their oaths depose and say that they are personally acquainted with Gabriel M. Lentz that they know of their own personal knowledge that the said Lentz served in the armies of the Confederate states of America from the year 1861 to 18865 in company D Twelfth Texas Cavalry, that he was a true and faithful soldier and did not desert the Confederacy.  Our source of knowledge is that we served in the army with him and in same regiment(?).

 AFFIDAVIT OF PHYSICIAN

The State of Texas
County of Bastrop

            Before me Paul D. Page County Judge in and for  Bastrop County, Texas, on this day personally appeared H. B. Combs, who is a reputable practicing physician of this county, who being by me duly sworn on oath states that he has carefully and thoroughly examined Gabriel M. Lentz, applicant for a pension and finds him laboring under the following disabilities which render him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn support for himself:  Enlarged prostate, kidney disease and piles and he is also unable to perform manual labor by being old in age and many other minor physical disabilities.

CERTIFICATE OF COUNTY JUDGE

The State of Texas
County of Bastrop

            I, Paul D. Page, County Judge of Bastrop County, State of Texas, do hereby certify that on the 7th day of November, A.D., 1905, before me came on to be heard the application of Gabriel M. Lentz for a pension under the Confederate Pension Law of this State, approved May 12, A.D. 1899; that the answers of said applicant to the questions propounded were made under oath as the same appear in writing in the foregoing application; that the affidavits of the witnesses who are credible citizens were made before me as the same hereinbefore appear, and that the foregoing affidavit of Doctor H. B. Combs who is a reputable practicing physician of this county, was made before me.  I also certify that the said applicant Gabriel M. Lentz, is not an inmate of the Texas Confederate Home, nor otherwise disqualified under the provision of Section 12, of the Confederate Pension Law.  I further certify that after considering all the proceedings had before me relative to the said application for a pension by the said Gabriel M. Lentz I find the said applicant is lawfully entitled to the pension provided by the Confederate Pension Law of this State, and I hereby approve said application.

CERTIFICATE OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The State of Texas

            We, the undersigned members of the Commissioners Court of Bastrop County, Texas, hereby certify that the foregoing application of Gabriel M. Lentz for a pension, together with the proof in support thereof, was duly submitted by Hon. Paul D. Page, County Judge of this County, at a regular term thereof on the 16th day of November, A.D., 1905, and after a careful consideration of the same we find the said applicant is lawfully entitled to the pension provided for by the Confederate Pension Law of this State, and we hereby approve said application.

            I have the honor to request the military record of Gabriel M. Lentz who is reported to have enlisted in Company D, 12 Regiment Texas Cavalry in the service of the Confederate States army.

            Purpose:  The person above named is an applicant for a Confederate pension granted by this State, and I desire to verify his proof of service.

was enlisted October 28, 1861.  His name appears
on the company muster roll from September 1, 1863,
to December 31, 1863 (last on file), but his presence
or absence is not stated.  No later record of him has
been found.

Q. Have you applied for a pension under the Confederate Pension Law heretofore, and been rejected?  If so, state when and where.  Answer:  no.

Q. What is your occupation if able to engage in one? Answer:  farmer.

Q. What is your physical condition?  Answer:  very bad.

Q. If you physical condition is such that you are unable by your own labor to earn a support, state what caused such disability.  Answer:  old age, piles, liver and kidney trouble.

Q. State in what company and regiment you enlisted in the Confederate army, and the time of your service?  Answer:  Co. D 12th Texas, served from beginning of war to the end, about 4 years.

Q. If you served in the Confederate navy state when and where, and the time of your service.  Answer:  did not serve in navy.

Q. State whether or not you have received any pension or veteran donation land certificate under any previous law, and if you answer in the affirmative state what pension or veteran land donation you have received.  Answer:  no.

Q. What real and personal property do you now own, and what is the present value of such property?  Give list of such property and value.  Answer:  none at all.

Q. What property, and what was the value thereof have you sold or conveyed within two years prior to the date of this application:  Answer:  I owned a life estate in 200 acres of land.  I sold it for $200.00 and paid my debts with it; the land was such that I could not make a living out of it.

Q. What income, if any, do you receive?  Answer:  none.

Q. Are you in indigent circumstances; that is, are you in actual want, and destitute of property and means of subsistence?  Answer:  yes.

Q. Are you unable by your labor to earn a support?  Answer:  yes.

Q. Have you transferred to others any property of value of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law?  Answer:  no.

Anderson and Guy Wolfenburger who are personally known to me to be credible citizens, who being by me duly sworn on oath, state that they personally know Gabriel Moore Lentz the above named applicant for a pension, and that they personally know that the said Gabriel Moore Lentz enlisted in the service of the Confederacy, and performed the duties of a soldier as claimed by him the above and foregoing application, our source of information is that we served in the same company and (?) all through the war and known him now to be the same person (?) and that they further know that he, the said applicant, is unable to support himself by labor of any sort.

Gill, who is a reputable practicing physician of this County, who being by me duly sworn on oath, states that he has carefully and thoroughly examined Gabriel Moore Lentz applicant for a pension, and finds him laboring under the following disabilities which render him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself: kidney trouble, liver affliction and piles, and general disability from old age.
