B. W. MASON
HANGS HIMSELF
 

   Thursday morning members of the family of B. W. Mason found his lifeless body hanging from a tree within a hundred yards of his home.

   Members of the family state that he seemed to have been in a melancholy mood for several days and on the morning of his death he stated that he was going to take some mules to the pasture in the early morning. Several hours later he was found with a rope around his neck and the other end tied to a limb of the tree. He was dead when found.

   Mr. Mason was 60 years of age and is survived by his wife and several children. He had been for the past 25 years manager of the Trigg Ranch at Cedar Creek. He had many friends and his disposition was of a pleasing nature in which he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was buried Friday forning[sic].

    The Advertiser extends to the members of the family its sincerest condolence in this sorrow that has entered their lives.

Obituary, Houston Chronicle, March 25, 1950

BRANUM – Mrs. Mary Jane Branum, 64 of 7121 Avenue I, died at 3:25 p.m. Friday in a Houston hospital.  Surviving are her husband, Alfred Branum; four sons, B.W., E.G., H.P. and R.L. Branum, all of Houston.  Funeral services at 7p.m. Saturday at Boulevard Funeral Home.  Body to be sent to Bastrop Sunday morning for burial.  Boulevard Funeral Home.

 

Obituary, Houston Chronicle, May 9, 1951

BRANUM – Burl William Branum, 41 of 7212 Palestine, accidentally killed Tuesday at Galena Park.  Survivors are his wife, Mrs. June Branum of Houston; his father, Alfred Branum of Bastrop; three brothers Jack E., Robert L. and Henry P. Branum, all of Houston.  Funeral services at 7p.m. Wednesday at the Boulevard Chapel, with Rev. A.A. Matney officiating, and at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Creek Cemetery at Bastrop.  Boulevard Funeral Home.

EMIL GORDEN (JACK E.) BRANUM, 64, of Route 5, Box 239, Alvin, born April 25, 1912, in Cedar Creek, Texas, passed away November 11, 1976 in Methodist Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.  Member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 year gold star member of I.L.A. Local No. 1273, former Lieutenant Co. E, Harris County Sheriff's Reserves, World War II Army Veteran, will be greatly missed by survivors:  Wife, Leta of Alvin; daughters, Frances Joan (Mrs. John Thomas Garrett) residence unknown; Charlette Brown of Pearland; Catherine Gonzales, Houston; Marie Baker, La Porte; brothers Henry Preston Branum, Houston; R. . (Bob) Branum, alta Loma; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Services 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 1976 at South Park Chapel with Pastor Gerold Erickson officiating.  Interment South Memorial Park.  Pallbearers:  Members of Pearland Police Department, Sgt. Bob Walter, R. B. (Buddy) Webb, Ralph (Buzz) Wyke, Marvin Priest.  In lieu of flowers if friends desire donations may be made to Cancer Research, Baylor College of Medicine.  South Park Funeral Home, 12400 Telephone Road, 485-2711.

Services Held
for John Kunkel

            Funeral services were held for John Herman Kunkel, age 82, at the United Methodist Church of Elgin on Monday, November, 11, 1974, at 2 p.m.  A World War I Honor Guard saluted their comrad (sic) as a final tribute in the service.  Members of the honor guard were Joe Meier, John Nichols, Tom Rankin, Carl Johnson, and Frank Hanke.

            Reverend Ross Welch officiated at the service followed by interment at the Elgin Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Eddie Kunkel, August Wiesner, W. E. Arbuckle, Jr., Leo Foehner, Otis Schanhals, and Kenneth Scruggs.

            Mr. Kunkel was born in Grassyville on October 29, 1892, and passed away November 9, 1974, at the VA Center in Temple, Texas.

            Mr. Kunkel is survived by his wife, Ellen Mason Kunkel of Elgin; sons, Willard Kunkel of Mission and Bob Kunkel of Grand Prairie; brother, Albert Kunkel of Smithville; sister Tina Wobust of Smithville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ellen Kunkel

            Mrs. Ellen Kunkel, age 82, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Elgin, died Friday in a McAllen hospital.

            She was born November 1, 1904, in Cedar Creek, Texas.  A daughter of Burl and Nettie (McAfee) Mason.

            A member of the First United Methodist Church in Elgin, she was known to many for her knitting and quilting, and had worked for several years as a nurse in the Fleming Hospital in Elgin.

            Preceded in death by her husband, John H. Kunkel in 1974, she is survived by two sons, Willard Kunkel of Mission, Texas, and Bob Kunkel of Grand Prairie, Texas; one sister, Lucy Hodge of Elgin, and two grandchildren, Gloria of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jack of San Francisco, California.

            Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Newby Funeral Home Chapel, with the Reverend Lon Speer, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Bastrop officiating.

            Interment was in Elgin City Cemetery by Newby Funeral Home of Elgin.

            Pallbearers were Bobby Wagner, E. V. Daniels, Vernon Kicher, Buddy Rose, Pete Rose and Jess Hellums.

Kunkel
Bob J, 63, a resident of Grand Prairie, passed away Sunday morning in a local hospital after a sudden heart attack.  Born in Elgin, TX he had been a Grand Prairie resident since 1959.  Mr. Kunkel retired in 1989 after 30 years from L.T.V. as an engineering methods manager.  He wa a graduate of Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree in industrial engineering and was a U.S. Navy veteran.  He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed building and flying model airplanes.  On September 27, 1964, he married Tinsy Dorsey.  He was a Methodist.  Survived by his wife of 30 years, Tinsy Kunkel; brother Willard Kunkel of Satellite, FL; niece Gloria Sumners of Orlando, FL; and his nephew, Jack Kunkel of California.  If desired, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.  Services at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 1995 at BEAN-MASSEY-BURGE CHAPEL, Reverend Tommy Weir officiating.  Interment at 2:30 p.m. at Highland Cemetery, Durant, OK, Deacon Albert Miller officiating.

Annie M. Byrum
Funeral Services
Held Thursday

            Mrs. Annie Mae Byrum, 65, died Wednesday, Nov. 8 in Rusk Nursing Home following an extended illness.

            Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel.  The Rev. Don Copeland and the Rev. A. D. Munsinger officiated.  Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

            Born in Bastrop County, Texas, Mrs. Byrum lived in Rusk for 36 years.  She was a Baptist.

            Survivors include her husband, James Byrum, Rusk; two daughters, Mrs. E. V. Daniels, Jr., Rusk and Mrs. Vernon Kitcher, Nacogdoches; two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Kundel (sic), and Mrs. H. G. Hodge, both of Elgin, Texas; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

            Pallbearers were Lloyd Smith Jr., Layton Jones, Howard Davis Jr., Wingfield Willias, Frank Ford and Harvey Ford.

TWO MEN KILLED BY TRAIN
Were Crossing the Track When the Wagon Was Struck
Smithville, Tex. Jan 28
This evening at 5:30 o'clock William Ashley, James Farris and Charles Farris attempted to cross the Katy track in a wagon ahead of the south bound passenger train. They were struck by the train, killing William Ashley and James Farris and badly wounding Charles Farris. The team of horses was killed and the wagon demolished.

(William Ashley was the husband of Hulda Ellen Mason.  James Farris was the father of Pinkie Farris Mason.)
