McAfee, Albert VOLUNTEER ENLISTMENT State of Kansas Albert McAfee, born in Lynn Co. in the State of Iowa, aged nineteen years, and by occupation a farmer do hereby acknowledge to have volunteered this seventeenth day of October 1868 to serve as a soldier in the Army of the United States of America, for the period of six months, unless sooner discharged by proper authority: Do also agree to accept such Bounty, Pay, Rations, and Clothing, as are, or may be, established by law for volunteers. And I, Albert McAfee, do solemnly swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever, and that I will observe and obey the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the Rules and Articles of War. Signed Albert Mcafee Sworn and subscribed to, at Iola Kans. this seventeenth day of October 1868 before Charles P. Twiss, Recruiting Officer. I certify on my honor that I have carefully examined the above named Volunteer, agreeably to the General Regulations of the Army, and that, in my opinion, he is ree from all bodily defects and mental infirmity, which would, in any way, disqualify him from performing the duties of a Soldier. Bailey, Surg. 19th Regt, Examining Surgeon I certify on honor that I have minutely inspected the Volunteer Albert McAfee, previously to his enlistment, and that he was entirely sober when enlisted; that, to the best of my judgement and belief, he is of lawful age; and that, in accepting him as duly qualified to perform the duties of an able bodied Soldier, I have strictly observed the Regulations which govern the Recruiting Service. Letter from Nov 9 1926 The Postmaster, Paige, Texas. A letter recently mailed by this Bureau to Albert McAfee, a pensioner by Cert. No. 8200 Ind. War, at R. R. 2, Box 26-C, was returned from your office because of the addressee’s death as noted on the envelope. You will confer a favor by stating the date of the pensioner’s death if known to or ascertainable by you, on the bottom fold of this letter and returning the same under cover of the enclosed penalty envelope which requires no postage. DECLARATION FOR SURVIVOR’S PENSION—INDIAN WARS Acts of July 27, 1892, June 27, 1902, May 30, 1908, and March 4, 1917. State of Texas, County of Bastrop On this 4th day of October, 1917, personally appeared before me, a notary public within and for the County and State aforesaid, Albert McAfee, who, being duly sworn by me according to law, declares that he is 68 years of age; that he was born December 11th, 1849, at Sac County, Iowa, and that he is an actual and bona fide resident of Bastrop County, State of Texas. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Iola, Allan County, Kansas under the name of Albert McAfee, in the fall of 1868, as a private in Company “C”, 19th Kansas Cavalry, and was honorably discharged spring of 1868 (sic), at Fort Hays, Kansas, having served thirty days or more in the war or disturbance with, or campaign against, the Arapahoes and Kiowas Indians, in the State (or Territory) of Kansas. That he also served – no other service. That otherwise than as herein stated he was not employed in the United States service. That his personal description at time of first enlistment was as follows: Height, 5 feet, 5 inches; complexion, fair; color of eyes, blue; color of hair, brown; that his occupation was laborer. That since leaving the service he has resided in Livingston County, Missouri, until 1879, then moved to Prairie County, Arkansas where he lived until 1882; then came to Travis County, Texas, where he lived until 1902. Has lived in Bastrop County, Texas since, and his occupation has been a farmer and laborer. That he has never applied for pension. That he is not a pensioner under any Act. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Acts of Congress granting pension to survivors of certain wars and disturbances with and campaigns against Indians from 1817 to January, 1891, inclusive.
