Winter 1861-1862 – measles at hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
April 30, 1862 – missing in action of battle of April 6, 1862, Pittsburg,
Tennessee.
June 30, 1862 – missing in action, 6 & 7 April, 1862, at battle of Shiloh near
Pittsburg, Tennessee.
August 1 to 17, 1862 – bronchitis, ret’d to duty.
August 31, 1862 – similar report to previous.
Prisoner of War records show him captured at Shiloh, April 6, 1862, paroled at
Montgomery, Alabama May 28, 1862.

(these four are over 16 years of age at this date), Lauren aged 14, Vernon aged
about 10, Ruth about 9, Leslie about 7, Earl 5 next June. Being 4 above 16
and 5 below 16 years. There are no records of these births.

Death benefit of $107.00 paid to Mrs. Ruth Tovani, 1222 Morgan Street,
Santa Rosa, California.
Invalid pension application submitted October 27, 1899,
rejected, “no ratable disability shown”. Claimed rheumatism, chronic diarrhea
impaired sight and general debility. Mentions measles and small pox.
Affidavit of November 15, 1899, claims rheumatism, defective eyesight,
chronic diarrhea resulting from small pox and measles contracted while in
service. Suffers rheumatism constantly, contracted from exposure while a
prisoner at Nashville, Catawba Ala., Chattanooga, Mobile and Macon, Georgia.
Had measles at Quincy, Ill., and three weeks later took cold at battle of Shiloh
and was captured.

Invalid pension application submitted April 2, 1902,
rejected, “a ratable degree of disability is not shown”.
Invalid pension application submitted October 21, 1903, citing rheumatism,
impaired sight, and general debility. Approved commencing July 3, 1903.
Affidavit of physician, Dr. Cuthbert Fleissner, April 2,
1962:
1) Hearing left ear lost and that of right ear partially lost.
2) A partial paralysis of right arm, due to an old injury incurred in an
accident.
3) An attendant is required in order to help the claimant bathe and dress
properly, to serve and cut his food and be with him if he should leave his
place of residence.
Affidavit by Vernon McAfee on February 24, 1926, P. O. address 712 Wheeler St.,
Santa Rosa, California, states father is living with him and his family.
Affidavit of physician, Dr. Cuthbert Fleissner, February
24, 1926, states senility and general debility and chronic arthritis in hands
and wrists.
Surgeon’s Certificate, September 16, 1903:
1864 – small pox, eyesight has troubled him since.
1899 – shoulder hurt from falling off load of hay. Unable to use arm much
since,
1861 – measles
General debility last 2 or 3 years.
