DEATH OF ALBERT H. McAFEE

   On Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17, death came and claimed another one of Bastrop's pioneer citizens, Mr. Albert H. [sic] McAfee, of Cedar Creek, who has made his home in Bastrop county since he moved to Texas, forty five years ago. Funeral services were conducted at his home in Cedar Creek the Rev. Paul C. Bell, of the First Baptist church of Bastrop officiating.

   Deceased was born December 4, 1849, in Iowa. Surviving him two daughters, Mrs. Mettie [sic] Mason and Mrs. Cora Rose of Kenedy, and Mr. A. H. McAfee of Thorndale.

   The Advertiser joins with the many friends of the family in extending its deepest sympathy in this their sad hour.

 

MRS. NETTIE MASON
LAID TO REST SUNDAY


   Nettie McAfee, the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Albert McAfee was born in Arkansas January 9, 1879. On September 29, 1897, she was married to C. J. Rose and two sons were born of this union. Mr. Rose passed away December 11, 1901. On December 15, 1902, she was married to B. W. Mason. Three daughters and one son was born of this marriage, the son passing away in infancy. Mr. Mason passed away August 20, 1925 and since that time Mrs. Mason has made her home with her children.

   She passed away very suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Horace Hodge, on Aug. 5, 1949.

   Besides Mrs. Hodge two other daughters, Mrs. J. H. Kunkel of Elgin, and Mrs. James Byrum of Rusk, Texas, and two sons, Albert Rose, of Dale, Texas and Charlie Rose, of Houston, Texas survive. One brother and two sisters and 14 grandchildren also survive.

    Mrs. Mason was converted early in life and united with the Baptist Church. She has lived consistent to her convictions throughout her long and useful life, and a large number of relatives and friends count their own lives richer for her having lived among them.

    Funeral services were conducted from the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Kunkel, and the Elgin cemetery at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. T. E. Holt, of McDade, and Rev. Seaborn Kiker, of Elgin in charge. The large crowd of relatives and friends and the many flowers attested to the love and admiration felt for Mrs. Mason and her family. The high character of her sons and daughters stand as a monument to her memory that will never fade.

   All the children and all the grandchildren except one were present for the funeral. Six grandsons served as pallbearers.
 

Mrs. A. H. McAfee Buried Here Tuesday

            Mrs. Susie B. Mason McAfee passed away at her home here at 8:55 o’clock Sunday night, January 12, at the age of 63 years, one month and 27 days.

            Funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, January 14, at the Marrs Memorial Chapel in Smithville, with the Rev. O. W. Summerlin pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bastrop, officiating.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

            Pallbearers were five grandsons as follows:  Maurice Lowden, Bastrop; Gene Worthington, Mexia; W. D. Martin, Jr., Shawnee, Oklahoma; Richard Lee Martin, Fort Worth; Earl Liard, Jr., Pasadena; and three nephews, Harold Eugene Mason, Humble; Emil Branum, Houston; and Elwood H. Houston, Texas City.

            Survivors include her husband, A. H. McAfee, Bastrop; one son, Alvin B. McAfee, Bastrop; five daughters, Mrs. DeFlay Martin and Mrs. Edward Lowden, both of Bastrop; Mrs. Stayton Worthington, Talco; Mrs. Edgar Wilson, Austin; Mrs. Henry Lee Mathison, Wortham; three sisters, Mrs. John Kunkle and Mrs. Horace Hodge, both of Elgin; Mrs. James Byrum, Rusk; one brother, H. T. (Jack) Mason, Humble; eighteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

            The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Burl Wilkes Mason, Mrs. Susie Mason McAfee was born on November 16, 1894 in Smithville.  She was united in marriage to A. H. McAfee in Austin on August 22, 1912.  As a young bride she made her home in Cedar Creek, moving to Bastrop with her family in 1936.  Mrs. McAfee became a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedar Creek in 1918, and transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church here in 1953.

            Although in failing health for a number  years preceding her death, Mrs. McAfee was aspired with faith and courage up until the end.  She was a devoted wife and mother, gifted with a friendly personality that endeared her to all who knew her.  Relatives and friends from out of town attending the services were H. Pat Harmon

            Graveside services for Ethel (Pat) Harmon, 72, of Rusk were at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Piney Grove Cemetery at Gallatin with the Rev. Don Copeland officiating.  Arrangements were under the direction of Boren-Conner Funeral Home.

            Mrs. Harmon died Sunday in East Texas Medical Center Rusk.  She was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Bastrop had lived in Rusk for two years.  She was a homemaker and a Methodist.

            Survivors are a son, J. E. Wilson, Jr. of Gonzales; three daughters, Jeanne Parsons of Gallatin, Jerrie Brown of New Summerfield and Nelda Norwood of Pflugerville; three sisters, Blanche Worthington of Mount Pleasant, Dovie Lowden and Beulah Martin, both of Bastrop; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services Held for Mrs. Mathison

            Mrs. Barbara Sue Mathison, 41, passed away at the local hospital early Friday morning, October 31, following a lengthy illness.

            Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning from the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Young officiating.  Burial was in the Wortham Cemetery.

            Pallbearers were Maurice Lowden of Bastrop, Richard Martin of Austin, W. D. Martin of Garland, Dwain Mathison of Richland, Clinton Mathison of Marshall and A. C. Mathison of  Wortham.

            Survivors include her husband Henry L. Mathison; five sons, Robert L. Mathison of Baytown; Jerry A. Mathison, Bobby Dan Mathison, Jimmie Wayne Mathison and Kenneth Dale Mathison, all of Bastrop; four sisters, Mrs. Stayton Worthington of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. DeFlay Martin of Austin; Mrs. Edward Lowden of Bastrop and Mrs. Douglas Harmon of Austin; one brother, Alvin B. McAfee of Bastrop; two grandchildren, Michael Alvin Mathison of Bastrop and Ronald Dale Mathison of Baytown.

            Mrs. Mathison was born on September 28, 1928 at Cedar Creek, the daughter of Albert H. and Susie Mason McAfee.  She attended the Bastrop Schools, and on December 26, 1942, she was married to Henry L. Mathison in Bastrop.  They made their home here until 1945, when they moved to Wortham.  In 1961 they returned to Bastrop and have lived here since that time.  A interested worker in the Baptist Church, she was a teacher in the Sunday School and a member of the Woman’s Missionary Union.

H. C. “Buddy” Rose

    H. C. “Buddy” Rose, 69, of Gonzales County, died Monday, October 23.  He was born September 9, 1926, to Albert and Dixie Pollard Rose in Bastrop County.

   
Mr. Rose served in the U. S. Navy in World War II.  He was a member of B. P. O. E. – Gonzales Chapter #2413, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a Shriner.
   
   
Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 28, at the McCurdy Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Bill Bailey officiating.  Burial followed a the Bunton Cemetery.

    Pallbearers were George Williams, Danny Sloan, Henry Condel, Donald D. Howell, Benny Engelke, James Mosely, Glen Martin, and Mitchell Fairchild.

    Survivors include his wife, Elaine Rose, of Gonzales; his daughters, Robin Rose and Rhonda Jackson, both of Lockhart; his step sons, Dred Martin III and John Martin, both of Houston, and Glen Martin of Gonzales; his step daughters, Teresa Washichek and Penny Christian, both of Gonzales, and Dawn Kirby of Katy; his brother, Pete Rose of Luling; his sisters, Betty Jean Hellums of Lockhart and Gail Coers of McMahan; three grandchildren; and 10 step grandchildren.

 Eula Aileen Rose

             Services for Eula Aileen Rose were held at Central Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Friday, February 5 [1993], with Rev. Wes Brown officiating.  Interment was in the Luling City Cemetery, under the direction of O’Bannon Funeral Home.

            Pallbearers were Mitchell Fairchild, Keith Garner, Bair Bairrington, Ray Seay, Rusty Hellums, and Dean O’Bannon.

            Mrs. Rose was born in Lockhart on August 14, 1926, to Jasper Collins Abbott and Elizabeth Lee English Abbott.  She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary and the Orioles.

            She died Wednesday, February 3, in the Edgar B. Davis Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

            Survivors include her husband, Pete Rose, of Luling; her father, Cy Samuel, of Del Rio; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Jim Bob Owens of Lockhart and Jackie and Monroe Fairchild of Luling; and three grandchildren, Mitchell Fairchild and Laurie Fairchild, both of Luling, and Matthew Owens of Lockhart.

            Funeral services for Albert Henry McAfee, 75, were held Saturday morning, March 22, at 10 o’clock from the First Methodist Church with Rev. Fred P. Bishop and Rev. O. W. sumerlin officiating.

             Pall bearers were all grandsons, Maurice Lowden, Bastrop; Richard Lee Martin, Forth Worth; W. D. Martin, Jr., Shawnee, Oklahoma; Gene Worthington, Mexia; Bryson Hardee, Austwell; Earl Laird Jr., Pasadena.  Interment was in Fairview cemetery.

             Mr. McAfee died quite unexpectedly, due to a heart condition.  He had been in apparent good health and been working in his garden just previously to his death.

             Mr. McAfee was born in Arkansas on July 9, 1882, the son of Albert and Mary Brock McAfee.  He and Miss Susie B. Mason were united in marriage on August 22, 1912 in Austin, Texas.  They made their home in Cedar Creek until January 1936 when they moved into Bastrop with their children.  He was employed as a grocery clerk until his retirement.  He was a member of the Methodist church.

             He was well known in this section of the county and a friend of all who knew him.

             He was preceded in death by his wife on January 12, 1958.

             Survivors include one son, Alvin McAfee, Bastrop; five daughters, Mrs. Edward Lowden and Mrs. DeFlay Martin, Bastrop; Mrs. Stayton Worthington, Talco; Mrs. Edgar Wilson, Austin; Mrs. Henry Lee Mathison, Worth; 18 grandchildren and 27 greatgrandchildren; one sister Mrs. Cora Rose of Beeville.

             Among the friends and relatives from out of town attending the services were Mrs. and Mrs. Edgar Wilson, Jean Swafford and J. E.
