Loved your site, I will be back to look some more. My husband is Joseph Miers Mobley. His father is in one of your pictures. Thomas Mobley was Joe's grandfather. It is really nice to see these pictures. We have been to one of the cemeteries to see the grave sites of some of the ancestors. Thank you

Hi Cindy, Just for fun I googled Smiley, and I came across this site. Wow, is this ever a great site. I was married to the late Paul Parker, who also graduated from Smiley High in 1972. We married in 1974, and I lived in Smiley until 1989. As a native of Smiley, Paul loved his hometown and all it's people. As someone who married into it, so did I. It was a delight to find this site, and you have done such a wonderful job with it. Paul spoke of you with fondness, and I can't wait to tell our sons, David and Mark about this site. Thanks so much for capturing a bit of their hometown for them to remember. They were very young when we moved away.

my grandfather, ynocencio burriola, owned a farm on the old smiley-nixon road. i remember him mentioning about a bustamente family cause he knew lots of farmers in the smiley and nixon area. he owned about 150 acres and that is where i was born and raised until i was about sixteen. my mother, sister and i eventually went to san antonio. i too, am trying to find more about my grandfather's ancestry, how he acquired the farm. he worked it, made a good living for us and he also had an orchestra called "the happy boys". the band consisted mostly of my uncles. have you, nick bustamante, looked at the burriola mexican cemetery on old smiley-nixon road. grandfather will the cemetery site to smiley. even though it started as a familey cemetery, there are other non-burriola people buried there. check it out.

I came across your site as I was researching Smiley for my family tree and really enjoyed looking at your pictures! My great-grandparents were Elias and Dolly (Martha Ursula Tyree) Thompson. They had a hotel and leather goods shop in Smiley in the early to mid 1900's. My grandfather was born in Smiley in 1900. My mother spent many summers there in the 30's/40's and has a lot of stories! I have a couple of photos - one of the leathergood store dated 1922 and a class picture of my grandfather's which was taken outside of what was probably the high school. I would be happy to share the photos for your Smiley website.

My birth certificate says I was born in Smiley, Texas but after invesigating where my parents lived in the country, I believe I was born closer to Schoolland. I grew up in Nixon and left after high school..I still have some family there and a few living friends. The Bustamante family were farmers all over that area since around 1870, first around El Nopal and later Smiley..Cheapeside..Wrightsboro..I also have been working on my family roots for some time and have done a lot of reserach in the Gonzales/Cuero area. I am still trying to locate where my GreatGrand Parents Tomas & Librada Bustamante are buried without any luck and when and how they died...Any help would be much appreciated....Nick

I graduated HS in 1970 in Houston, but spent all my formative years in Smiley, Tx, and even went to school there in 3rd grade (1961). My grand parents retired to Smiley b4 I was born. They were Kyle and Ethel Wrist. Ethel was the oldest of 10 children born in Smiley, her maiden name was Parker. Patty Parker signed in herein 03, I spent a lot of time playing with her siblings Betty and Paul. I remember her parents, Roland and Suzy very well. I can't remember but I believe Roland and Ethel were siblings. I also remember "Pete's" and the Tabloid. I went to the Methodist church as a kid. Great memories, thanks. My little girl was asking about Smiley and I googled it. Thanks again, Kyle Sherrill

My root go back to John Mason . Your listing of the Mason side was very good. I wonder if any of your ancestors originally lived in the double mountain area of Texas. I found an interesting old letter or story , I'm not for sure which in some of my old papers. It was an intrigueing story, I don't know if real or a work of fiction. I know that you come from Texas . I wondered if there was any old family lore of a boy dying while buffalo hunting? Have a good day. Robert Mason

love your website since it is my only connection to smiley. saw an entry by robert cooley and wonder if i went to school in smiley with his brother, don. if i had stayed in smiley (moved to san antonio) in 1953, would have graduated with don cooley in 1956.. i graduated in 1956 in san antonio and went to work at kelly air force base. there was a reunion in smiley a few years ago that my sister, anita, participated in and saw many smiley people. she sent me a t-shirt from the reunion and has a "bantam" in front of it. on the back of the t-shirt, it says "keep on smiling". people that i meet in ohio often ask me where the t-shirt comes from and what it means. i always have to tell them my story of being born in smiley, texas. i am always smiling so they tell me it fits my personality. am hoping to go visit smiley soon in the near future and visit my mom's cemetery plot(guillerma (willie/emma) burriola. we have our family cemetery on the old smiley-nixon road.

i find your website very educational. i went to school in smiley with a young man (colley). he is about my age and i graduated in 1960 also, but in san antonio. i left smiley in 1953. i have lots of memories of smiley, both good and bad, but they are my memories. i visited there a while back and saw the old buildings downtown :drugstore, pool hall, grocery stores. i used to shine shoes in the pool hall. one of my fond memories is the string of lights at each end of town during xmas. that was the only decoration for smiley. i talked to an older fellow while on my last visit and asked him about the lights. his response was "now those lights blink". keep adding to your website. i live in ohio and this is my only website connection to the past.

I noticed you have on your site Smiley, Texas. My husband was from Smiley, Texas. I was wondering if you knew any of his family (Parker's) from there? So many of the people around the Gonzales County area are kin. In checking my family tree I found out my husband and I share a set of ever so great grandparents and I wasn't raised in Gonzales County! We turned out to be 8th cousin's one time removed. Found this out after 53 years of marriage!(Quinney connection) Would love to hear from you. Doris

What a wonderful website! I'll come back again. I lived in Smiley from 1947-1949 with my grandparents so the pictures brought back many memories. I was born in Nixon and lived in several small towns in Gonzales County and Texas. I do some genealogy work also. My great aunt Pearl Caraway was married to Carrie Mobley. Her daughter Ina Bishop raised her family in Smiley. Some still live in the area. Carrie Mobley hung himself when his three daughters were young leaving Pearl to raise them on her own. I have many relatives buried in Smiley, Nixon and rural cemeteries in Gonzales County. My mother lies there as well. In 1988 we took her back in the Spring and buried her beneath the wildflowers she loved. If you are related to Carrie Mobley let me know and I'll give you the names of some of his descendants.

greetings, May I say your web site is wonderful? I am a descendant of William Sr. Frankim found in Rowan county, NC in 1772. He and his sons Francis, John, Timothy, and William Jr, are listed in Rowan county tax lists. Part of Rowan county became Burke county in 1777. Between 1810 and 1820 some of these Frankum descendants moved from Burke county to Ky. The Francum's that stayed in NC spell their name with a "C". Those that left, kept the "K" spelling that can be found in old Burke county records. Although there is one census for 1800 that lists them as Francom. The 1790 census lists them as Francum; 1810 till 1870 the spelling is Frankum.

Hi, Congratulations on the great site. Keep up the great work. I am descended from John Wilcoxen, Thomas, Thomas, John Belt "Will-coxon", John (m. Fanny Baker), Samuel (m.Sarah Swearingen), Eva Retta Wilcoxen (m. Hamilton Archibald Riley). Samuel and Sarah moved from Wheeling, WVa and lived in Wheeling, WVa (VA) and that Brooke Co, Beaver Co, PA/Hancock Co, VA border area. The Swearingens and Wilcoxens lived on both sides of this border and were close otherwise. They moved to Kansas and so you find quite a few Wilcoxens and Swearingens there. Wilcoxens and Swearingens are in the Saline Co and Decatur Co, KS areas. My grand uncle, still alive in KS, adopted a girl many years ago and she married a Swearingen. The world is a small place. Working off my memory, it looks like you share much of the same line. Your Samuel Wilcoxen (m. Christiana Baker) is where our lines diverge. My mother and I may go to the 350th anniversary of Garrett Van Swearingen's arrival. It will take place the 23rd of Jun, I think, in St Mary's, MD. There should be some information on the web. There will be a lecture and probably some possibility to visit a few sites. There is going to be an exhibit as well. Again, keep up the great work. Genealogy has become our obsession and it seems you have the bug too. Thanks again for making it available like this. Robert

Hello cousin! I am still working on many items of the Dunavan history here at home. We are still about 260.00 short of getting Anderson and Elizabeth's new headstone, but will get there sooner or later. I noticed in the photos of the cemetaries that you have John and Frances Dunivans stone pictures in the Niccum cemetary listing. They are buried in Hughes Cemetary in Perysville, Indiana. I kind of got off track with the family genealogy for awhile this summer and fall. I created a website on my former grade school here that closed in 2002 and have spent a lot of time building it. Another history that i didnt want lost, we had a Douglas school in Danville for 144 years and since i got the site online it has been bringing alot of former students and faculty back together again. Well, if you need any info or copies of any pics that i may have, etc. let me know. Your Cousin, Dennis

Your site is GREAT! I "Googled" and there you were! McKEACHEY!!! I just discovered I am a direct descent of John MASON through William MASON and Sarah McKEACHEY. William and Sarah are my 5th GG parents. They sound like an exciting family. I just read a bit about John and William today and downloaded your info for family. BIG THANKS! To give you a bit of info you can add to your growing family...I come from William and Sarah's daughter Margaret "Peggy" Mason. Bet you wondered what happened to that ole girl! Well, she married David(s) CHAMBERLAIN b.1775 VA, they had several children including William CHAMBERLAIN who was born to them in 1805 in KY. And as family history does we continue....William m.Rachel Brown, they had a daughter they named after Williams mother, her name...Margaret "Peggy" CHAMBERLAIN. "Peggy" married William Elias BARNES in KY a wealthy land owner and businessman...they had several children together, on Ancestry.com you will see William Elias m.3x. (His first wife was the older sister Mary Margaret CHAMBERLAIN) however, so as not to confuse further William Elias and "Peggy" had a son Ivy Lankford BARNES b.TX, Ivy married Ola Mae Watson in TX moved to OK and had JH BARNES. "JH" is correct, that's his name, they are not initials...JH m.Lucille Grace ENOCHS in OK, they had my father, Gerald Lee BARNES in TX in 1929. I enjoyed your website ...you have put in a lot of work. I know as I have been at this for over 25 years myself! I don't know if it is of interest to you, but I could give you the parents of Andrew Davis who married Christina Niccum as the Davis line is my lineage and that is how I came upon your website.

Hello Cousins, really must say a great site you have going here. Just to let you know, I am having the Niccum Cem. sign frame rebuilt right now, it should be back in place hopefully by September, I guess when i purchased the new sign the frame was made with non-treated lumber and it finally gave out. Also, have ordered and recieved two additional bronze military markers i will have installed for veterans day at Niccum; Charles Kyger 1834-78 (Civil War) and John W. Collins 1840-1925 (Civil War). Also, we have achieved enough to order a new double marker for John and Frances (Hughes) Dunivan at Hughes Cemetery and are at about 80% of the cost for the replacement for Anderson and Elizabeth Dunavan at Niccum, so hopefully will have enough to erect it for next memorial day. Well, thats about all i have for the moment, anyone feel free to email me at anytime at dennisdunavan@yahoo.com.

Cindy, You work with my daughter Darla Kay Hutto, and she gave me your homepage address. After looking at the Parker Wilcoxen line I realized that your great grandfather Tilman's brother Edward Wilcoxen married my great grandmother Mary Jane Bless. She was his second wife. I visited their graves in Illinois on the 29th of May of this year. I also have information on Tilman's other brothers and sister taken from census data if you would like it. Please contact me through Darla.

Cindy, This one of the greatest things I have run across. It is very informative and beautifully done. I came in because I was looking for anything on my Bastrop County connections. The connection is by way of Jacob Louis/Lewis. He and Sarah are my great-great grandparents. So, one of his sons, Daniel Monroe Louis and Frances Jane MOBLEY are my great grandparents. I am particularly interested in the Mobley and Duncan lines because I have a feeling they are the keys (in some way) to getting beyond the wall we have with Jacob and Sarah. After looking at you site I am even more determined. Sarah was a Sheppard. Bang, there is Joseph Sheppard Mobley. That teacher who made the assignment in 1968 sure did a lot of us a great favor. You do beautiful work. Thanks, Dan Louis 979 776-0073

My grandfather was Thomas Oscar Mobley, born approx 1887. He married his first cousin, Virgie Harvey around 1905. He lived in the Texas "Hill" country, either Itasca or Massey, Texas. Virgie was from Tippah County, Mississippi. Do you have any information that might help us connect Thomas Oscar Mobley to the rest of the Mobley family? We believe his mother may have been named Callie Harvey Mobley and either his father or grandfather may have been George Washington Mobley, but we are not sure of it. Any information you can provide would be most appreciated. We have registered with Carl Mobley but we cannot connect any father back than Thomas Oscar Mobley. Thank you,

I was interested in your William Frankum of North Carolina. I came across some of them in the census records there while searching for Franklin families. My ancesotor Isaac Franklin born about 1810, is said to be the son of Nancy Franklin. She appears in early census records as Nancy Frankum. Are you aware of any connection between the Frankum families and the Franklin Families of Burke County, North Carolina?
